Choosing a gold chain

Weight tells you more than length does. Two 22 inch Cuban link chains can differ by 30 grams or more depending on link width and whether the links are solid or hollow, and that difference drives most of the price.

TNS Diamonds has been on Philadelphia's Jewelers' Row since 1991, with a family history in the trade going back more than 40 years. If you're after something specific that isn't listed, we can source it. Call 215-922-1501 or send us a text.

Common questions

What's the difference between a Cuban link and a Franco chain?

Cuban link uses flattened interlocking oval links and reads as wide and heavy. Franco is a tighter four-sided box weave that looks slimmer at the same gram weight and sits flatter against the skin. Franco tends to be more durable at narrow widths, which is why it's popular as a pendant chain.

What's the difference between solid and hollow gold chains?

Hollow chains give you more visual size for the money because there's less gold in them, but they dent and kink more easily and are harder to repair. Solid chains cost more for the same width and hold up far better to daily wear.

Is 10k, 14k or 18k better for a chain worn every day?

14k is the usual compromise. 10k contains less gold, so it's harder and more scratch resistant but paler in colour. 18k has the richest colour and higher gold content but is softer and shows wear sooner. For an everyday chain, 14k sits in the right place on both counts.

How do I know what I'm actually buying?

Every listing photo is the actual piece, never a stock image. TNS was among the early adopters of diamond certification and hallmarking on Jewelers' Row, and that same approach to transparency applies to how we list gold.

Can you find a specific chain that isn't listed?

Yes. Our sourcing network covers pieces we don't currently hold. Call 215-922-1501 with what you are looking for.

Do you repair gold chains?

Yes. We have onsite jewelers who handle jewelry repair and custom work rather than sending jobs out.

Where can I see these in person?

136 S. 8th Street, Philadelphia, on Jewelers' Row. Open Monday to Friday, 10:30am to 5:30pm. See our contact page for directions, or sell us gold while you are in.
