What Consignment Actually Means Here

When we consign a watch, we’re not buying it off you. You still own it. We authenticate it, photograph it, price it, list it, and negotiate with buyers on your behalf, and you get paid once it sells.

People assume consignment and trade-in are the same conversation. They’re not. A trade-in or direct buyout is us cutting you a check today. Consignment means waiting for the right buyer, but it also means you’re not leaving money on the table just because you wanted a fast transaction. For a clean Daytona, a Nautilus, or a Royal Oak, that difference can be five figures.

How We Actually Run It

First step is always inspection, in person on Jewelers’ Row or shipped in. We check the movement, confirm the reference, and go through box and papers, since papers change the number more than most people expect. We don’t pull a price from a guide. We look at what’s actually closed recently, our own sales, Chrono24, auction results, and land on a number that reflects the real market that week.

From there the watch gets professional photos, a listing, and a push to our following on Instagram and TikTok, which is a bigger audience than most consignment desks can offer. We keep you posted as offers come in and handle every back-and-forth with the buyer so you’re not fielding lowball texts yourself. When it sells, we take our commission off the top and pay out the rest, usually within a few business days of funds clearing. The commission percentage and how long the watch sits before you can adjust price all get put in writing before it goes live. No surprises at payout.

What We Actually Want to See Come Through the Door

Steel sport Rolexes, Patek complications, Royal Oaks, pieces with real, consistent demand, those move fast and sell close to full value because we know exactly what they’re worth and so does the buyer. Full box and papers and a documented service history make a real difference too, since a complete set sells faster and for more than the same reference missing its box.

If a watch is missing papers, needs work, or comes from a brand with a thinner resale market, we’ll still consign it, but we say upfront it might sit longer or need a price adjustment. We’d rather have that conversation on day one than after six weeks with no movement.

Why Our Fee Is Worth It Over Listing Solo

We get this pushback constantly. Say we get an offer through Chrono24: Chrono24 takes 6%, TNS takes 10% on top for consigning it. Sellers do the math and ask why not just list it themselves for 6% and keep the difference.

Fair question. If all you’re paying for is access to the platform, you’re right, you overpaid. That’s not what the fee covers. Chrono24 runs on trust scores, and buyers weigh that heavily before wiring six figures to a stranger. A first-time seller listing a $40,000 watch is going in cold. We’re not, we’ve got years of closed transactions and an established trust rating that a private seller can’t replicate overnight. That shows up in how fast the watch sells and what it sells for: buyers pay closer to asking price and lowball less when the listing comes from a seller they can verify. That risk premium buyers apply to unknown sellers is usually worth more than the fee gap. We’re also handling authentication, real photography, buyer negotiation, and secure payment and shipping, the parts that trip up a first-time seller mid-transaction.

If you already run an established Chrono24 account with a strong trust history, you may not need us for that sale, and we’ll say so. For most people consigning a single watch, the trust gap is worth more than the fee difference.
